Storytelling producers work with the elements of the storytelling experience, the venue, the vibe, the tellers and the listeners, to create a unique storytelling experience. They each have their own perspective on storytelling. Stay tuned for more producers and storytellers, mostly on Mondays, brought to you by Carol Ramsey at carolmramsey.com
Katie Haab is the Executive Director of the Austin Bat Cave, a non-profit that teaches writing to kids. She is also the producer of The Story Department, a monthly storytelling show at Home Slice Pizza on South Congress. The show’s storytellers are mostly writers with different styles and backgrounds.
Q: What is the style and focus of your show?
A: Story Department lets storytellers pick their story based on one common theme.
Q: When you are reviewing submissions, what do you look for?
A: N/A [The Story Department selects storytellers ahead of time, but they do not have a submissions process. Email Katie Haab firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.]
Q: What is most important to you about the performance of a story?
A: We want the story to be important enough to the storyteller that the audience cares and is engaged in the tale, an authentic engagement with the audience and teller.
Q: Why do you produce a storytelling-related show?
A: Austin Bat Cave, a nonprofit that teaches free writing programs for kids, survives solely from donations. Story Department’s proceeds all benefit ABC’s programming. Everyone who attends Story Department is contributing to ABC programs AND an evening of fun. It’s win-win!
Q: What are stories good for, really?
A: On a larger level, stories are building blocks of history. From a personal perspective, ABC celebrates children’s stories, letting them know that their voices matter and their personal narratives are power. Even though our programming highlights stories from kids, Austin Bat Cave celebrates all stories–adult ones at our Story Departments.
Q: If you could make up your own question, what would it be and what is the answer?
Q: How can people get involved with Austin Bat Cave, as a volunteer or for The Story Department?
A: Email Katie Haab at email@example.com!
Thanks to Katie for her time! The Story Department is an Austin classic and a guaranteed fun night out that will never be the same twice. A hint for single people out there, a recent storyteller proposed to his girlfriend at a Story Department because that is where they met. I’m just sayin…
